Paraiso (2015) - Direct Cinema Documentary film by Nash Ang

Paraíso is a "direct cinema" documentary film that follows the lives of child survivors one month after the tragedy of the strongest typhoon ever recorded on earth, Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. We will see their struggles as they live on and rebuild their lives in what was once their Paraiso, which is but a memory of tragedy and great loss.

Director Statement

Paraíso is a moving and intimate documentary about the children survivors of typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). It captures the day to day activities of the survivors and how they cope up and rebuild their lives 1 month after the tragedy. Inspired by the documentary technique of direct cinema, we want the docu to have a real and authentic feel, as we follow their lives, like an observer.

When we made the documentary, we heard many stories both heartbreaking and inspiring. Paraíso is our message in a bottle; we want to share these stories of the child survivors to the world. We hope to touch and inspire many viewers with the documentary especially the international community, to encourage them, a call to action to help and reach out to these children. Paraíso might not be able to change minds, but it changes hearts.

새로운 출발!

우리 <스켈레톤 크루> 3명은 진흙범벅의 도로를 헤치며, 뙤악볕이 내리는 가운데 지역 주민들을 추적하였습니다. 때로는 폭우까지 쏟아지는 최악의 상황 속에서도 우리는 주민들의 일상, 특히 성탄절, 신년맞이, 그리고 올해 첫 수업을 담아냈습니다. 비록 태풍 참사 이전의 것들에 비하면 턱없이 부족한 삶을 살아가고 있지만, 이 곳의 아이들은 그러함 속에서도 삶에 대한 희망을 잃지 않았습니다.

우리는 12일동안 세 가족 (산 호아킨 출신의 라칸다조 가족, 타클로반 출신의 아델란다토 가족, 코곤 출신의 두쿠에 가족) 을 추적하였습니다. 세 가족은 태풍 참사로부터 살아남은 생존자로, 당시에 겪은 피해와 극적으로 목숨을 건졌던 순간을 생생히 전하였습니다.

촬영을 마친 뒤 우리는 각자의 위치로 돌아갔습니다. 필자는 대한민국 서울로, 빅로트 빌라누에바는 필리핀 마닐라로, 그리고 로니 감보아는 필리핀 세부로 뿔뿔이 흩어졌습니다.

오늘은 <프로젝트 파라이소>의 후반작업이 시작되는 날로, 세 가족과 지역 아동들을 돕기 위해 본격적인 홍보전에 돌입하게 됩니다. 블로그를 통해 지역의 사진들을 공유하는 한편, 미처 공개하지 못한 촬영 뒷얘기에 대해서도 게시할 예정입니다.
앞으로도 계속해서 이 프로젝트에 대해 관심과 성원 부탁드리며, 지인들에게 소문내 주시면 더욱 감사하겠습니다. 이 프로젝트를 통하여 수해민들에게 따뜻한 손길을 내어드리는 분들이 더욱 많아지기를 기원합니다.

The New Beginning

A skeleton crew of three braved through muddy roads, followed people under the inescapable heat of the sun, and walked through bipolar downpours from Christmas, New Years Eve, up to the start of classes in January, but none of these could compare to what the children of Leyte went through the day Typhoon Haiyan brought about its wrath. However, these children showed resiliency in the midst of devastation. 

We followed three families in the span of 12 days; Lacandazo Family from San Joaquin, Palo, Adelandato Family from Tacloban and Duque Family from Cogon, Palo. These families are some of the thousands who have survived the tragedy and shared to us their stories of loss and survival.

Now we went back to our places. Me, Nash Ang to Seoul Korea, Victor Villanueva to Manila, Philippines and Ronnie Gamboa from Cebu Philippines.

This day marks the official post production phase of Project Paraiso and start the campaign for helping these families and their children to recover from the ground. After sharing a travel photo blog, We will post weekly updates on the details of our shooting since we have more time to write.

Merry Christmas!

I'm Nash Ang, a Filipino filmmaker based in South Korea.

Welcome to the humble website of our movement!  We plan to film a documentary film about the children who have survived the devastating tragedy that Typhoon Haiyan brought to the Philippines, particularly in Leyte.

We will feature 2-5 kids with different backgrounds about their living, their, family, their incredible stories of survival during the storm, their dreams and future plans. At the same time, we will also document their everyday lives, from Christmas until the beginning of classes on January. 

Things may not be as we would expect it to be when we get there, but we have prepared ourselves enough to brave the coming days with enthusiasm and determination. While we have no full description yet about the our film, one word summarizes what we want to show --- Paraiso (Paradise) Why? Find out soon!

한국에서 활동 중인 필리핀 영화감독 안내쉬 인사드립니다.
본 영화의 웹사이트에 방문하신 여러분을 환영합니다. 이번 작품은 태풍 하이옌 참사에서 살아남은 아이들에 대한 이야기를 담은 영화입니다.

2명에서 5명 정도의 아이들을 밀착 취재하면서 아이들의 삶에 대한 이야기, 특히 그들이 느꼈던 당시의 공포, 그리고 그들이 꿈꾸는 미래에 대한 스토리를 다룰 예정입니다. 또한 아이들의 새해 맞이 풍경과 새해 첫달 수업을 준비하는 모습 역시 담아낼 것입니다

.

아직 촬영이 시작되지 않은 관계로 당초 계획에서 여러 가지 사항이 변경될 수도 있습니다만, “Paraiso”(주 : 타갈로그어로 “이상향 혹은 천국”) 라는 한 단어로 저희의 이번 영화를 압축해서 표현할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 왜 그런지는 이번 영화를 보면서 확인하시면 되겠습니다.

フィリピン人フィルムメーカーのNash Angです（韓国在住）。

このウェブサイトでは、私たちが近々撮影を予定しているドキュメンタリー映画について、その内容や取材状況を紹介していきます。

フィリピンのレイテ島を襲った台風30号（国際呼称ハイエン）を生き抜いた子供たちに向き合うドキュメンタリーです。

異なる生活環境で暮らしている子供たち（2名から5名）を取材し、彼らが台風30号で何を目の当たりにし、何を願い、どんな将来を思い描いているのかを取り上げていきます。年越しの様子や一月の新学期に向けてどのように過ごすのかにも着目します。

撮影はこれからのため変更も出てくるかもしれませんが、プロジェクト名である『Paraiso』（パラダイス）は作品に込める今の私たちの想いを端的に表していると思います。どういうことかについては、今後の展開をご注目ください。
